I had to post a parcel today and the girl behind the counter asked me, "Do you mind if I put stamps on it?"
"Um... no." What a peculiar question. I was posting it; of course I want stamps on it. It was only while watching her count out twenty small denomination stamps that I realised that they usually print out a label with the amount on it and stick that on instead. "Is your machine broken?"
"No, no, I can print a label if you like." She moved to sweep the loose stamps off the parcel.
"No, that's fine. I just wondered why."
"Are you sure? It's no trouble."
"Really, they're fine."
I eventually persuaded her that I was absolutely groovy with the concept of using stamps to note postage value, and she continued opening packets of stamps and sticking them onto the parcel. She eventually explained that this counter doubles as the philately desk and they're using up the last year's packets of collectible issues. "But not everyone likes them," she said as she finished accounting for $6.50 worth of postage with twenty-six stamps.
