The fun article in this week's medical newspaper is about blood groups. Apparently we don't actually know what purpose they serve, other than different blood groups seem to be more susceptible to certain diseases, so perhaps it's nature's way of spreading the risk around. As a type O, it was a depressing read of all the things I am more likely to get than other blood groups: cholera, smallpox, plague, norovirus, pituitary adenoma, duodenal ulcers and ruptured Achilles tendons. Plus, tuberculosis is more common in people who are Rhesus negative. On the other hand, I am more resistant to malaria. Swings and roundabouts. Big swings and one very small roundabout.
