I went back to my old primary school the other day, doing research for my Community History project, and was amused to discover there are now only fifteen pupils with six teachers. The teachers are all part-time, with five of them teaching that afternoon. That student-teacher ratio must be the best in the country. When I was there nearly twenty years ago, there were about thirty students, give or take, with only one teacher.

The school also has two classrooms (one in my day), a full-size oval (used for grazing cattle, because the municipal oval is just across the road should they need it), a tennis court, an adventure playground (new), a grassy, tree-lined play area (new, because the new classroom is where the play area from my era was), a vegetable garden (new), fresh country air, a neighbouring church (it's a Catholic school) and is less than half an hour away from the City by the Sea. All for astonishingly low fees. Take that for privilege, Shane Maloney!

I just got a call from a telemarketer, which I hate, but this was different – it was a recording. "Hello!" said the oily phone voice with a telltale background hiss. "Did you know you can cut your phone bill by …" I'll never know what the end of the question was, because I hung up, pleased I didn’t have to be rude to an actual person. Perhaps I’ve led a sheltered life, but I didn't know about this new development in cheek.

In other news, Pinkie the cat has been sick these last couple of days, but is, happily, now well again.
