Brandy mounds
Jan. 12th, 2008 06:27 pmThis morning I visited an antique fair, which was lovely. I have particular weaknesses for glassware and cloisonné enamel and vintage china. I've got enough stuff cluttering up my house, though, without developing a collecting habit. Still, it doesn't hurt to go and look.
There was a glorious gold telescope with its own wooden box, dating from the 1800s and more or less the same size as the one I got for Christmas. I had a momentary twinge of "oh, I could have had an antique one"... until I saw the $30,000 price tag and realised that no, I couldn't.
I did buy something though. I found a 1940s tourist bracelet made of eight tiny enamel heraldic shields representing different French cities and bought it as a two-and-a-half month early birthday present for myself.
Also, in a moment of rashness, I agreed to make brandy snaps for dessert. My previous attempts at making brandy snaps have resulted in shapeless mounds rather than tubes. They taste all right, but I haven't mastered getting them off the tray and rolling them around the wooden spoon. Fingers crossed for this batch.
