Workers! United! Will Never Be Defeated!
Jul. 20th, 2010 01:57 pmSitting at my desk this morning, minding my own business (well, minding my work's business, I suppose), I became aware of an unusual amount of activity happening on the road below. So I stood up to get a better look and saw seven police cars parked on or around the roundabout and lots of policepersons stalking about importantly and talking into their radios. Five minutes later I picked up the sound of distant chanting, and we all repaired to the big corner window to see what was happening.
It was a union rally, we eventually determined, watching about three hundred men in orange or yellow safety vests wandering past (I couldn't honestly call it a march; more of a stroll). Their chanting was a bit ragged, so we couldn't tell what they wanted. I thought it was Come One! Come All!; my boss thought it was Plus One! Plus All!; neither of them makes an awful lot of sense. Then they did a couple of minutes of Workers! United! Will Never Be Defeated! as they disappeared up the street. Something to do with the election, I suppose. It added a bit of interest to the morning, anyway.
You know how glossy magazines like to set their fashion spreads in glamorous and exotic places? Improbably, Italian Vogue has decided that the City by the Sea's own historical village and museum, Flagstaff Hill, is one such location. They will be shooting at the Lighthouse Lodge in a few months. What sort of spread will it be: something with a nautical theme, or something unlikely like ball gowns? I honestly can't imagine.
