My local council issues a magazine every now and then, which informs us of all the wonderful things our rates are being used for. The latest issue has a feature about children's birthday party packages at Flagstaff Hill. Flagstaff Hill is a model village, where you can step back in time to 1870 and pretend you're in Deadwood. Apparently, it hosts birthday parties for children. There is a choice of themes: Captain Pete's Treasure Party or a Victorian Tea Party. This is what the magazine had to say about them:

While boys tend to choose the pirate themed bash, the Victorian Tea Party has been a firm favourite among young ladies.

'Girls are taught about etiquette at the table and having the chance to wear bonnets and behave like ladies from the 19th century,' Ms Brian said.

During these civilised parties teapots are used to serve the lemonade into tea cups and pretty pink cupcakes and fine finger food are offered in the quaint surroundings of the Flagstaff Hill tea rooms.

'Girls love dressing up,' Ms Brian said.

Meanwhile, pirate parties are usually held in the more robust surroundings of the Steampacket Inn, where the boys are fed homemade lemonade in tumblers and sword-shaped inspired food is served to the hungry masses.

The pirates have a treasure hunt and at the end the birthday boy is presented with a treasure chest filled with gold coins and a big birthday cake.

It is quite spectacular, according to Ms Brian.

One of them sounds much more fun than the other. There is now a third option, which is new and gets a whole article to itself: the in no way copyright infringing Mini Master Cook, which invites children to dress up as chefs and cook their own wholesome scones. The party guests mix up their ingredients, put them in the oven and while they are baking, go out for old-style games such as quoits or potato-sack races in the village.

I don't know. As a little girl, I probably would have liked the Victorian tea party, but I would have liked the pirate party too. I suppose what I am trying to say is that I like that there are options, but I don't like the way the council/magazine/Ms Brian genders them. Here endeth my Deep Thought of the day.
