The space safari
Jun. 22nd, 2011 03:00 pmDoes this look like something cartoon cannibals would cook explorers in to you?
Today I received the alumni email from my university. Last year, they had a poll about what we'd like to see them cure first out of AIDS, cancer and a variety of other nasties. I don't know how they're going with that, but in the meantime they've invented a temperature-sensitive bandaid that changes colour if your cut finger gets too hot, thus indicating infection. Who'd have thought hypercolour t-shirts would inspire a medical breakthrough? The email also had a link to the university's online short courses, including Conversational Japanese, Beginning French and Spanish for Law Enforcement, which offers participants the chance to [m]aster the fundamentals of the Spanish language by practicing basic conversational skills and learning essential Spanish terminology for law enforcement situations. That seems... oddly specific. I could understand if it was Portuguese, because then it might be useful for police going to work in East Timor, but I can't think of any Spanish-speaking nations that might require Australian law enforcement assistance. They also offer a Project Management Fundamentals course, the blurb for which begins: There are more projects occurring today than at any time in history. That makes me imagine cathedral builders looking at a GANTT chart.
A woman has just walked past my window carrying an inside-out umbrella. Wintry fun times. I have heard tell of umbrellas with double layers of fabric so they don't turn inside-out. Do they work, do you know?
