Today was the Melbourne to Warrnambool bike race. Sorry, not bike race; cycling classic. Since the cyclists had ridden all the way from Melbourne, I felt the least I could do was walk twenty metres to watch them pass by. The highway was blocked to traffic, but one car ignored all the signs and drove through the witches' hats and drove across, which got the nearby police and SES in a bit of a tizz. One of them had to run after him, fruitlessly, then they got in their van and did some talking on the radio and writing in a little notebook. That driver is going to be getting a visit from them at a later date, I imagine. So that was exciting.

There has been a stray cat around for months. Not Percy (he was never stray so much as homeless). This stray is a very young grey and white cat, not much more than a kitten. It's a cute little thing, but a pest. It appears quite late, as if it's been put out for the night, and sneaks in to see if there are any leftovers in Percy's bowl.

It belongs to the woman who lives on the corner, one of the kittens from her cat. According to her neighbour, Heather, she only wants the 'old mother cat' and if she can't find a home for the kittens she just lets them run wild. So we tsked about the thoughtlessness of some pet-owners and went our separate ways.

I've noticed in the last couple of weeks that the little cat has changed its schedule. I've seen it a couple of days before breakfast, for example. This morning I met Heather on her way back from getting the paper and she asked about the new people who have moved in across the road and said something about new people everywhere, why, she had new neighbours too: 'that woman with the cats moved out'.

'But the grey and white one is still here. I saw it yesterday.'

'Oh my goodness,' she said. 'Do you mean she left it behind?'

Apparently so. What a bitch. Not Heather, I mean. The woman who left it.

Now I feel guilty that I've been chasing this little cat away. I know I can't catch it, so I think on Monday I'll call the Local Laws Office and see about getting them to trap it and take it to the RSPCA. Maybe they can find it a proper home.
