Today in a craft shop I saw 'light-up knitting needles'. For knitting in the dark, you see. What a sight that would be, pitch black illuminated only by glowing knitting needles.

I am in the dark right now, as it happens. The power is out at my location in Warrnambool, as the information line said, please call back in two hours for more information. In two hours it will be midnight, and if the power's not on by then I'll be in bed, not ringing to find out how much longer it will be off. If only I hadn't scoffed at those light-up knitting needles. They seem like a great idea now.

I have thoughts brewing about how much I dislike the work 'crafting', but I can't quite articulate them yet. So there's something for me to ponder while I sit in the dark, instead of knitting.

My mother has been second-hand book shopping this week. I looked at her purchases today; among them was an old home hints book. Thus have I learnt that to clean discoloured fingernails, scrub them with a mix of equal parts sugar, lemon juice and dripping. I did read more than that, but promptly forgot it. Oh, no, wait: cats don't like orange peel, so if you want to keep them off your lawn, scatter some peel about, cut side up. Of course, you'll have a lawn covered with rotting orange peel, but you can't have everything.

Continuing my quest to read all the books I own before I acquire anything new, today I started Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier. Page 11 gave me this:

'A girl can't live alone, Mary, without she goes queer in the head, or comes to evil.'

I live alone!
