There seemed to be too many jacks and not nearly enough queens in the game of Solitaire I just played. I hate to make a serious accusation without solid evidence to back it up, but I think it must be said: my computer cheats at cards.

I find Margaret Attwood to be a most frustrating writer. I read a novel of hers ages ago; I can't even remember what it was called, but I remember that I loathed it. Back then I was young and foolish and thought I should persevere with every book I started (these days, of course, I'm old and ruthless and will happily jettison any book that hasn't grabbed me by - at most - quarter of the way through). So I forced myself to continue with it and resented Attwood on every page and had her firmly fixed in my head as an Author I Definitely Do Not Enjoy. Then I read Alias Grace, which I loved, and The Blind Assassin, about which I was ambivalent. Today I read The Penelopiad and didn't hate that either. So do I read Oryx and Krake or not? Sigh. It's so much easier with AS Byatt and PD James; I think it's safe to say they are permanent fixtures on my Definitely Do Not Enjoy list.
