It is HOT, f-list. I'm not ready for hot yet.
Working full-time has really cut into my reading time, hmph.
October books read
* Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik (2018) ★ ★ ★ ★;
This is a sort-of take on Rumplestiltskin. In a fairy-tale version of Lithuania, Miryem is the daughter of a Jewish moneylender, Wanda is a peasant girl working off her father's debt, and Irina is the daughter of a duke. When Miryem takes over her father's business, her success leads people to say she can spin silver into gold, which attracts the attention of the ice elves. And there's a fire demon and a battle to save two kingdoms and a lot about the different sorts of debts we owe people — but mostly what this is about is family.
It gets a bit confused at times — as well as the three main characters, there are occasional POV chapters from other people, and I found the logic behind the demon a bit odd — but overall I enjoyed this a lot.
* The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - Stuart Turton (2018) ★ ★ ★
If Agatha Christie wrote a murder mystery based on Groundhog Day and Rashomon, this is what you'd get. A man lives the same day at a grand house eight times in eight different bodies, each time trying to solve the mystery of who killed the daughter of the house, each telling getting more and more complicated as he crosses paths with himself. I loved the conceit; I wasn't sold on the eventual explanation for the man's predicament.
