Leading up to the release of A Certain Book last week, the local paper had a competition going for primary school (aged about 5-11) children to write what they thought would be the final paragraphs.* The winners were published today. Fascinating stuff, if only because it revealed that many children aren't at all familiar with the concept of "the end"; many entries finished with Harry striding** off while vowing to kill Voldemort. That's not a proper ending, kids! Anyway, the big winner was quite a dull one in which Voldemort made Harry disappear, but these are some of my favourites from the runners-up:

Sophie M., 8
"Voldemort and his gang had left a trail of disaster. It was up to Harry and his gang to do what they could. They voted and decided to make Harry the Minister for Magic. That way they hoped the world would be a safer place once more."

Daniel J., 9
"Harry Potter was walking down a path down the road when he saw a cave. Inside the cave was a bear. Harry Potter zapped the bear with his wand and bear ran away.

Harry Potter saw a crystal and gripped it with both hands and the cave collapsed. He ran out just in time, and the crystal shined and it showed where his friends were held.

Harry went straight to his friends and battled the troule and killed him and saved his friends."

Tyler M.
"Harry turned from Ron's body. 'You killed him,' he yelled at Voldemort.

'Yes I did and you're going the same way.'

'No I'm not,' Harry said. 'Avada Kedavra,' Harry said in unison with Voldemort. The spells met in a shower of green sparks. Voldemort and Harry both used all their strength to cast the spell. The Voldemort gave one final push and the spell hit Harry. Harry's scar kept him alive for a while. 'Hermione will kill you,' Harry said as his life ebbed away.

Voldemort just said, 'I'd like to see that,' and then he cackled and cackled as Harry died."

* An idea that should be taken up for the release of other books as well, I think. Imagine the kiddies having a go at writing the end of the next, I don't know, AS Byatt tome.
** He does an awful lot of striding, according to these children. From this (admittedly small) sample, it seems that striding, dying and kissing Hermione were the things children were expecting Harry to do in DH.
