Today I came across a magazine article that made me do a double-take. It was about things we do and how dangerous (or not) they are for our health. For example, forgetting to clean your teeth before bed isn't all that bad (as long as it's just once and not a regular thing). Well, yes, I'll agree with that.

Another thing the article said was not dangerous at all was trying on pierced earrings in the shop, and this is where I have to differ. My mother (admittedly, a noted scare-monger) spent most of my teenage years telling me horror stories about girls mysteriously stricken with a strain of hepatitis C that was eventually traced to the time they wore a pair of earrings belonging to a friend. Hospitals are full of these poor young women, apparently.

Personally, I don't think that there are as many girls with this problem as I was encouraged to believe. However, my mother's warning did its job; the idea of trying on earrings in the shop has never even entered my head. Are other people really doing this?
