Pin money

How appropriate: Mordor was in Transylvania all along.

I found one of my leeks lying on the ground yesterday, which was a bit odd. This morning, looking idly out the window while eating my breakfast, I saw the baby crow stomping about the vegetable patch. It stopped by the leeks, grabbed one with its beak and tugged until it came out. Then the it (the crow) ran off to play with a leaf, leaving the uprooted leek lying on the ground. So that explains that. Tsk. It's a quandary, because I love leeks but I'm also quite fond of the crow family. I rescued the leek and shoo-ed the crow, but to show it I had no hard feelings I wore my crow pendant today. Which is stupid, because it's not like the crow can see it, but it made me feel better.

Back in high school, if one of my friends borrowed a CD or a book from me, she would, without fail, mention that I really should remove the price stickers; sometimes she would even offer to do it for me. I usually left them on, though, partly because I wanted to, but mostly just to annoy her. Her argument was that the sticker was getting in the way of the cover artwork; mine was that I paid for the whole experience of the thing and the price sticker was part of that. (I should point out I'm only talking about things I bought for myself here; I'd definitely remove the price tag from things bought as gifts for other people.) Anyway, I thought of that today when I was looking for a drawing pin. My box of them still has the price sticker on the side: I can't remember when I bought it, but it cost me $3.23. I realised that's the real reason I wanted to keep the stickers on: it's like I've captured a moment in time that would otherwise be lost. (My interest in ephemera obviously started long before I knew it.) This afternoon I used the office stationery catalogue to price a similar box of drawing pins, which would now cost me... $3.85. So I probably shouldn't start waxing nostalgic about the Good Old Days When Drawing Pins Were Cheap just yet.
