Guess what I had for breakfast this morning! Slices of a cantaloupe plucked from my very own garden just minutes earlier. It was like a proper cantaloupe that you buy from the shops and everything. I am thrilled. I wasn't entirely convinced they would grow this far south.

Later, I met my mother and we went to spend her birthday gift voucher from Blue Illusion, her favourite clothes shop. This shop promises 'stylish clothes for women 35 and over' and I used to be fond of pointing out that I was too young to shop there. Now my mother delights in pointing out that I am old enough to shop there, until I point out that this means she is old enough to have a daughter old enough to shop there. It is a fun conversation. I expect we will have a similar one in a quarter of a century when I am old enough to get a Seniors card.

Anyway, while my mother was trying on tops in Blue Illusion, I tried on a houndstooth beret with a kicky buckle and ribbon perched on one side. It looked ace. I have very little to be vain about, so I am proud of my ability wear a hat. Then I saw the price and decided that I didn't want to spend $110 on a beret. Race week is fast approaching, so hats are fetching a premium these days. Maybe I will see if it is still there, and cheaper, after the races. Also, while I was waiting, the shopkeeper asked if I would mind taking a stack of letters to the post office for her, four shops along. I did take it, but I thought it seemed a little odd. Do shopkeepers normally trust strange customers to do their postal business?

Today I read something in which the author was being scathing about Alain de Botton, referring to him as 'Alain sodding de Botton'. I found that jarring. To me, it should be 'Alain de sodding Botton'. What do you think?

I don't know what Optizorb is, but I like it. I wish other things came with Optizorb. Dark chocolate, for one. In the supermarket yesterday, I noticed that the people who make Nurofen, not to be outdone, are now making Nurofen with Zavance, which makes similar sort of promises to Optizorb. I like Optizorb better, though.

You know what's got natural Optizorb? My oyster mushrooms. On Monday evening I set up my coir log and the photo here shows it this (Saturday) morning, like an alien forest.
