Toast expert
Aug. 4th, 2010 02:20 pmI've just read a review of a book about pancakes, which says of the author: Ken Albala has pancake credentials. He writes that during half a decade of graduate school, he made a pancake every morning, without exception. If that's the only qualification needed, look out for my book about toast, coming soon.
Other things that have caught my attention today have been all about the old folks. First, the idea that elderly patients with dementia can be calmed by soothing music has taken a hit with an Australian study showing that playing them Vivaldi and Handel actually triggers more behavioural disturbances. I love the idea of grumpy old people rioting because they're not getting enough 'Roll Out The Barrel'.
Still, at least they're not in Japan, where Tokyo's oldest woman has not been seen for around 50 years, officials say, days after they found the three-decade-old skeleton of a man who was thought to be celebrating his 111th birthday. The 113-year-old woman's daughter hasn't seen her 'for about 50 years'. They also can't find a 102-year-old man, who didn't attend his son's wedding in 1972 and hasn't been heard of since. So... these people actually aren't that old and no-one's noticed? That's both sad and sort of mind-boggling.
