Dec. 30th, 2018

Things I saw with antlers this week: a race horse training on the beach; my neighbour's car.

I have spent the last few days preparing for the new year. I like drawing a line between old and new. My inbox is empty, my bank accounts are reconciled, there is a box of clothes to take to the charity shop. I am knitting madly to finish that jumper I started last December, and I will make it, I think, with only fourteen rows of sleeve to go. Having said that, it will be finished, but it won't be, as I have enough wool left to pull out the band and make the body a little longer. But that's a task for next next. I just want to get it off the needles for now.

Closing out the old year leads to plans for the new one. Thinking about my new job, where everyone is very nice but it is an odd set up; how to make that work? It helps, I think, that I am not as personally invested in this job as I was at old work, and it's much easier to leave it behind when I go home. And I have craft projects I want to finish: the jumper from above, some embroidered panels for a quilt my mother and I were making. A newsletter I subscribe to mentioned choosing a word for the year, and the first one that came to mind was clarify. Getting rid of the excess to make things clearer. I should stick it on my pinboard so I see it every day.

Tomorrow: a special treat for us all to see out 2018. That's right, I've read my annual Cartland. It has people doing karate and a woman being kidnapped by horse thieves, and somehow manages to be so much less exciting than it sounds.
