Kevin Rudd (the Prime Minister) came to the City by the Sea yesterday. Of course he did. Who wouldn't want to come here? Anyway, he came to visit a friend of my mother's. Actually visit her, in her house, for a barbecue lunch. Her son and daughter-in-law and two young grand-daughters died in the Black Saturday bushfires last year (she was on the phone to them at the time until their connection dropped out, which is, to me, the most awful part of a very awful story). The PM has apparently kept in touch with her and her husband since he met them at the memorial service. So that was nice.

It is a bit suspicious, though, that he appeared in town at the same time as 'popular' costumed television character Plucka Duck, who was here for Wunta (the City by the Sea's annual festival). Look: Kevin Rudd and Plucka Duck, both at the same local attraction on the same day. Coincidence? I think not.

The best bit of the paper's coverage of the visit was an interview with one of the neighbours, who said, 'This is the most exciting thing to happen on Manuka* Drive since the bloke across the road got his stolen Landcruiser back.'

I am finding my new working days very confusing. Thursday is the end of my week, so Friday feels like Saturday and Saturday feels like Sunday and Sunday is a weird sort of extra day on which I am all at sea.

Finally, today I passed a house with a flagpole on the roof, upon which was flying the skull and crossbones. I would have thought (with no good reason, I must admit) that that wasn't entirely legal, but there you go. I hope they're actually pirates, though.
