I have got the most enormous red spot on my chin. It looks like Rudolph's nose. It is particularly upsetting because tomorrow is our first staff meeting with our new video conferencing system, and I was hoping to look at least halfway presentable. Hmph.

I am still working my way through my backlog of books. When I got the Kindle, I downloaded a lot of stuff from Project Gutenberg and ManyBooks, so I have a glut of turn-of-the-century fiction. I don't think it's good for me. I've just started The Blue Wall by Richard Washburn Child (1912). I'm only 8% of the way through it. (I love that the Kindle tells me that. So much better than page numbers.) It is about a doctor who is brought in to treat a young girl who is sick with meningitis. She is one of those children who were multitudinous in this era, sickly but wise beyond her years, with deep blue eyes that see further than just out the window. I suspect she has golden curls. You know the type. I think she and Diamond from the Back of the North Wind would get on like a house on fire. They could be angelic and sickly together. (I predict she will recover from her illness, though.)

Anyway, her sickness is somehow related to the wall next to her bed. It's blue. It's the titular blue wall. For the first seven percent of the book, not a page went by without the doctor commenting on the mysterious... blue wall that this girl keeps staring at. He goes on and on about the... blue wall. He is oddly drawn to the... blue wall himself. He works really hard to imbue the... blue wall with an air of menace, but just sounds a bit mad. Anyway, he goes next door to find out what's on the other side of the... blue wall, but the maid is strangely unhelpful and shuts him out. Fair enough too; I wouldn't let a stranger in to look at my... blue wall either. So that is where I put it down for now: he doesn't know what's on the other side of the... blue wall. It's a mystery, f-list; a spooky, spooky mystery. What will it be? Whatever it is, I bet it's underwhelming.

Having said that, I'm interested enough that I haven't cheated and read a synopsis online (yet). I'll keep you posted.
