I went to visit my mother this morning, finding her writhing in agony as she couldn't remember the answer to one of the clues in the weekend paper's general knowledge crossword. 'What's his name?' she said. 'I know it, I know it, it's on the tip of my tongue.'
'What's the clue?' I said. 'Maybe I know it.'
She looked at the paper. 'South American chap with a daughter.'
'That's a very broad clue.'
'I'm paraphrasing.'
'Do you want to give me the real clue?'
'No,' she said. 'That covers it.'
'Oh.' I took a stab at the first South American father-daughter combination that came to mind. 'Salvador Allende?'
'That's him!'
(I checked the actual clue later: Which president of Chile and founder of the Chilean Socialist Party was assassinated in 1973 when a right-wing coup overthrew his government? (8,7))
