The Perfume of the Gods

I am a sucker for free tat in craft magazines. My newest acquisition: dachshund-shaped cardboard embroidery thread bobbins. I never knew my life was incomplete without them.

I had dinner with my mother and John last night. They live in a little town just outside the City by the Sea. Every spring, the town's primary school has a scarecrow competition. All the students build a scarecrow with a fairy story theme and put them in their front gardens for a couple of weeks. It is decorative. On my way to my mother's house, I passed Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, the Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty and, not one, but two Tin Men.
I found my mother in her garden, talking to her neighbour, Jan. 'There's another Tin Man down the school lane,' said my mother when I mentioned the scarecrows. 'Next to Jack and the Beanstalk. There are Three Little Pigs if you take the Mortlake side of the turn-off.'
'There's a funny one just near the old shop,' said Jan. 'A tall one with a little one next to it.'
'I thought that was Pinocchio and Geppetto,' I said, 'going by the little one's clothes. The one I didn't get looked like Pippi Longstocking being crucified in the manner of Saint Peter.'
'I know the one you mean,' said Jan. 'Bugs Bunny hanging by his feet.'
'Rapunzel,' said my mother. 'Bending over the rails to let down her hair.'
All residents are invited to go down to the school and vote for their favourite. Both my mother and Jan had voted for Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. It was good, I suppose. Also, it was done by the kids directly across the road.
