Our lockdown is starting to be lifted, although word came from on high this week that office workers are to stay working from home, if possible, at least until the end of June. We are allowed to have visitors now, so my mother's friend, Colleen, and her husband came for afternoon tea when they were in town for a doctor's appointment this week. Other people! In the house! Such excitement.

They looked in at me working in the spare room and admired my office set-up. Their daughter in Melbourne is also working from home, from her kitchen table in her tiny apartment. I am lucky, I know.

May books read

* Mythos - Stephen Fry (2018) ★ ★ ★
This is a fairly straightforward retelling of the Greek myths, no more, no less.

* Falconer's Lure - Antonia Forest (1957) ★ ★ ★ ★
I read the Marlow school books, term by term labelled on the spines as numbers one to four, many years ago. So real and believable and beautifully written: very superior versions of girls' school stories. One of the lovely things about the books was the sense of time passing and events happening between terms... and so they had, in the Marlow holiday books, which I didn't find out about until much later. It's a delight to catch up with them now (this is where they move to Trennels, this is where they meet Patrick, this is where The Sprog comes from), even as the senior Marlows perpetrate some extremely questionable parenting (how Peter escapes a well-deserved lecture on gun safety remains a mystery).

* Surfacing - Kathleen Jamie (2019) ★ ★ ★ ★
A beautiful collection of essays, part nature writing, part travel, each dealing with different ways of surfacing: objects in an archaeological dig, memories, selves.

Meanwhile, what I've been doing instead of reading: I have finished the last stripe (I am not sure I care for the colour of the last spots), and have started on the band. All things going well, I should be finished this time next week.
