Cat chat

The unexpected death of Next Door's Mopsy a few weeks ago has had some equally unexpected consequences. It seems Mopsy's presence, strolling through my garden on his daily rounds, was a deterrent to any other neighbourhood cats. Without him, I've noticed, they feel quite able to use my garden as a public right of way path to get wherever it is cats go. As well as the gorgeous and grumpy ragdoll cat from the house behind, there has been a shy, fluffy black cat, a friendly, chatty grey and white cat and a super-cute, super-friendly, super-stupid black and white kitten that made the mistake of looking too cute too close to the house and got a Pink pummelling for its insouciance. I haven't seen it again. I'm trying to deter them all, actually; I don't really want to be the neighbourhood's crazy cat lady.

Anyway, I opened the kitchen blinds this morning to see Miss Pink looking off stage left, eyes agog and ears a-swivel, and went out to investigate. No other cat to be seen, but coming from Next Door was the unmistakable sound of (dun dun DUN!) puppy yips. They've got a ten-week-old Jack Russell terrier puppy; so cute.

Despite always having another cat around, from kittenhood Miss Pink's preferred companion was the Old Black Dog, so I know she can get along with dogs when she wants. I've also seen her chase or ignore them, as her fancy took her, so I know she's not bothered by the ones that aren't her Best Friend. Still, she hasn't had any regular contact with dogs since the Old Black Dog died ten years ago, so this will be interesting. At the very least it might stop her sneaking in to Next Door's garden to look thoughtfully at the guinea pigs.
