The first official day of spring and the nectarine tree is in blossom at last. Just a handful of mid-pink flowers that I noticed this morning, with many more still tightly furled buds. The sour cherry has been in blossom for weeks, and fallen drifts of petals now cover the driveway under the tree like so much pale pink snow. The apple tree was nearly in blossom, but as of Saturday it has gone, alas (to a good home, rest assured), victim of preparations for the new paving and landscaping. The crab-apple tree shows no sign of pink yet and only has three more days to do so. It will go to the same good home next weekend. When the builders have gone, there will be new trees: another, smaller apple variety and (hooray!) a lemon, at the very least. The more the merrier, for me. I love blossoms: the colours, the shapes, the arrival of the new season, the look and sound of the word.
