Guess what's on a shelf in my laundry!
A box of portobello mushrooms, quietly pushing up through their compost. I'm supposed to leave them alone until Thursday, and I really don't know how I'm going to manage. It's only been a few hours and I've already been several times to look at it. You never know, one might shoot up and burst out of the box.
It's the thing I miss most about living on a farm, I think: this time of year, going for a wander about the paddocks and picking a dinner's worth of mushrooms. Nothing is as good as fresh field mushrooms, but after years of taste-testing I've decided portobellos come pretty close. Fingers crossed they grow well.
I had dinner with my mother and John this evening. John came in carrying a little cane basket wrapped in yellow cellophane. "Look at this!" He'd been at his archery club this afternoon, as he is every Sunday, leaving his car unlocked (tsk!) in the carpark. When he came back to it he found the basket on the front seat. Some mysterious benefactor had given him seven homemade cheese and chive scones, and very tasty they were too. So thank you, unknown scone-giver!
